A beloved old tradition is coming back to life as the Etelänkylä Bridge Dance returns this summer on Friday, July 3.
The event takes place on the old wooden bridge in Etelänkylä – a proud landmark of Pyhäjoki, officially recognized as a heritage bridge. Having dominated the landscape for generations, the bridge provides a truly unique setting for the event.
Games, sing-alongs and dancing
There will be plenty of program for the early evening. From 6 to 8 PM, lighthearted games for both children and adults will be organized in the area between the ice rink and Kielosaari. In the event tent next to the bridge, visitors can get into the spirit through a communal sing-along led by Seelarit from 7 to 8 PM.
The dancing begins at 8 PM and continues until 11 PM on the old Etelänkylä bridge, where the cheerful Pelikaanit orchestra will provide the music for the evening. Food stalls will offer coffee, soft drinks, and both savory and sweet snacks, so visitors can comfortably spend a longer summer evening at the event.
A low-threshold gathering place
The Bridge Dance event is part of Pyhäjoki’s Local Heritage Week program. This warm and welcoming event offers a great opportunity to meet familiar faces and get to know new people.
Everyone is welcome – whether driven by nostalgia or simple curiosity. These are so-called “sneaker dances,” meaning the barrier to joining in is as low as possible, and everyone is encouraged to step onto the dance floor.
The Bridge Dance event is free of charge and suitable for all ages. Children attend with their parents, with safety aspects such as the proximity of the river taken into account.
The event is organized by the Pyhäjoki Local Heritage Association in cooperation with local businesses and organizations. Kielocamp will also be open and part of the festivities.

Experience the timeless charm of Finnish summer at Yppäri’s Merimaja, where traditional dance nights bring people together by the sea. Located in a stunning coastal setting in Pyhäjoki, the pavilion offers a unique atmosphere where visitors can enjoy dancing while watching the sun set over the Bothnian Bay.
Dance evenings are held during Midsummer and on summer Thursdays through late August. The pavilion features a spacious, high-quality wooden dance floor designed especially for social dancing, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced dancers.
Finnish “lavatanssit” (pavilion dances) are a beloved summer tradition, combining live music, partner dancing, and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Couples move gracefully across the floor to a mix of Finnish schlager, tango, waltz and other popular dance styles, creating a nostalgic yet lively social experience under the soft glow of evening lights.
For those looking to improve their skills, free dance lessons are often arranged in cooperation with the Raahe Dance Club one hour before the dance evenings. Please check the exact dates and details on the Merimaja website.
Merimaja’s octagonal, covered dance pavilion provides shelter while maintaining an airy, authentic wooden hall feel. During dance nights, visitors can also enjoy refreshments from the on-site café as well as beer and traditional Finnish grilled sausages.
For the latest information on performers and schedules, please visit Yppäri Merimaja’s website and social media channels.
